Probably today’s most stable Portuguese jazz combo, having been together 10 years. Bernardo Sassetti, Carlos Barretto and Alexandre Frazão all have individual projects too, and are amongst Portugal’s most talented jazz musicians. They have created a “collective awareness of time and space” according to Sassetti, which can be seen in the space they occupy on the jazz scene.
Some say improvisation is telepathic, while others find that hard to believe. This trio has such understanding that each can predict where the others will go and can prepare the right response. Sassetti sees Barretto as “always seeking the improbable”, and Frazão as incapable of blandness. The result is anything but sterile.

Os preços do concerto em Lisboa vão dos 15 aos 50 euros, ao passo que no Coliseu variam entre os 30 e os 45 euros.

At 14, Jan Garbarek heard John Coltrane. It was a revelation. He bought a teach-yourself-to-play-saxophone book before he even had an instrument.
Coltrane’s interest in Ravi Shankar opened up Indian music and his quartet taught him about band dynamics and instrumental relationships. Other role models were Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster and Johnny Griffin, but mostly pianist George Russell, who invited 18-year-old Jan to join his band in 1965.
Since then he has recorded often for ECM with the likes of Keith Jarrett, Ralph Towner and Chick Corea.
His unmistakable sound comes over most clearly in the Jan Garbarek Group, tonight performing as a quartet, with musicians who have been together for over 15 years.
